The 41st Chess Olympiad
The event of 41st Chess Olympiad is underway in the remote village of Tromso, Norway. (When I say remote, I do not kid. This village is located in Norway's far north above the Arctic Circle.). The event takes place every two years in cities all around the world. In this year's event, approximately 1572 players from 179 countries will be competing for international cups for both male and female players. The play starts on August 1st and goes to the 14th of the same month.
Let the games begin!
If you are curious, Chess.com will be providing coverage after each day's round of play. Live matches will also be made available online from time to time.
If you are a bit curious about what goes into the tournament, here is a lovely Chess.com articles that covers the whys and wherefores of the event.

Yeah this is a fun one but tough to follow because of the hundreds and hundreds of games!
And alas, the good ol' USA fell to the Netherlands...

Ha, ha! Take that haughty team USA! That will teach you to mess around with the pleasant European land of windmills, dikes, and culinary crepes.
Seriously though, the USA performed under par. Both a US grandmaster and another highly ranked player lost to Netherland players of lesser rank.

Re: The 41st Chess Olympiad
I don't like to think of myself as a nationalist, especially when it comes to such pursuits as chess, but I admit I care less about what Carlsen or Ivanchuck or Gelfand are doing - I wanna know how team USA is faring against competition.
Answer: horribly. After the previously mentioned lackluster play, we have continued our decent. We are now ranked #37 (yes, thirty-seventh, not a typo!). We are below the follow esteemed teams:
Peru
Moldova (who?)
Uzbekistan (really?)
Cuba (NOT the Jr actor guy, the Castro one)
Vietnam (at least we can beat them in real war. Oh wait.....)
Turkey (joke's on us for that)
Qatar (I think they chop of their opponents heads for religious purposes)
I think maybe I'll move to Georgia, the country, not the state. They're actually ahead of Russia right now.

No chess gold for team USA. They suck like Qatar in chess or like Ghana in World Cup soccer.

From 37th to 6th. Not bad, but not impressive either. Sam Shankland has been tearing it up.

Based on that last name, I think I'll change mine to Shivland. That should put the fear of God into my enemies.

Re: The 41st Chess Olympiad
And just like that, it's over. 6th seeded USA ended up 14th overall, while 7th seeded China took gold. It's interesting that 1st seeded Russia was beat out also by Hungary and India (and that's without Anand playing, too).
Still, Sam Shankland* (the only American born player on our team) was quite impressive, and won the gold for his board.
*That name is only impressive if you're playing Prison Chess.

How about that? It looks like the Chinese are expanding into areas of improvement other than ping pong and cheap goods manufacturing. Will wonders never cease?

Whatever. You've been to China. You know how it's going to be in a few decades. We'll all be speaking Mandarin and bowing to our foreign overlords.

So what's the next big chess event?
