I could spend hours on this site.

A 100-megaton bomb detonated on Temple Square in Salt Lake neatly covers all the major cities of the Wasatch Front from north to south and east to west. I imagine things would be roughly the same should a nuclear device be detonated on or around the vicinity of Hills Air Force base.

Meagan and I were talking recently about what would happen if Hill was nuked. If there were to be a nuclear exchange between world powers, Hill would be a top priority, as it is one out of only a few air force bases that has a long enough runway for the B-52. If China (a randomly selected belligerent nation...) dropped its standard 5 MT ICBM on Hill, we live in the airblast radius, and well within the 3rd degree burn radius. The casualties would be relatively minor (~400,000), but that would be little consolation to us, as if we happened to survive our house collapsing around us, we would apparently be burned to a crisp.

Something to think about the next time you're gaming up at my house.

Looking at the wikipedia page for that movie, and then following the links on it (like MAD, fail deadly, decapitation strike). You know, cold war stuff. I was alive at the end of it, though I was just a child. Still, it was a subject that captivated the world.

As I looked back through all those articles (I probably read a couple dozen cold war related articles; by the way, apparently the Russkies had and still have the Doomsday Device featured in Dr. Strangelove), I wondered to myself whether nuclear Armageddon was an actual possibility. Would the leaders of the USSR and USA really have unleashed nuclear hell? Or was the entire thing a silly international masquerade built to engender and fulfill nationalistic pride?

And then I read the atrocities of world history from the ancient days to the modern and come to the gloomy realization that we, as a species, lucked out.

Ah, the Cold War. It was a nothing more than a multinational muscle flexing contest. The only rule of the contest was to inject the athlete, or in this case military budget, with enough money money to produce the bigger better muscle grouping.

Heck, again, I don't know. Looking back at it now, it seems ridiculous. Like you say, a multinational muscle flexing contest. Was there really no danger that one nation would set the other off and a real nuclear apocalypse follow? I really, truly wonder...
