Play Magnus Carlsen

Post by Casey on Mon Dec 01, 2014 7:30 pm

Holy flying monkey turds Batman! Chess.com is hosting a simultaneous exhibition with Magnus Carlsen (the renewed world chess champion, for those who have short memories). Details on the page below, but you gotta be a diamond member to play a live qualification tournament. There are eight such tournaments, and the winner of each will be one of the players in the simul. Am I gonna play in the tournaments that I can? You betcha. Do I have a snowball's chance of winning one? Yes, a snowball's chance!!!

Hey, yeah I recall seeing this ad on Chess.com this morning. I wonder how Chess.com managed to get their hooks into the current champ? Promises of free prawns and pawns for life? A solid gold chess board with pieces crafted from only the finest solid gems?

Well, in any case, I won't be able to participate in this thing. I rank far too low on the membership leader to even think about it.

Do I have a snowball's chance of winning one? Yes, a snowball's chance!!!

It may be a snowball's chance in hellfire, but I'll wish you luck all the same. Imagine playing Eric Philbrick's long lost twin in chess. I mean seriously, look at the guy:

Hmmm I see no resemblance. I actually think he looks like he's autistic. I'm not the only one. Apparently he's been asked that by the media.

Oh. I think I've made that point before without success. Maybe next time.

Well, the event has come and gone. The Grand Master Emperor Admiral of the invincible chess square won 10 out of the 11 games played against him. Even 11 brains are no match for might of Magnus. If chess masters were light bulbs, Magnus Carlsen would have imploded and formed his own blazing sun.

Sadly, I didn't participate in the playoffs, as I had some things come up.

But Rainn Wilson (aka Dwight Schrute) did play in the tournament. His game is here, checkmated in 28 moves:
