Re: The Chess News Thread
Finally, in round 8, something happened. The Champ resigned and then walked out of the building in a huff. Magnus Carlsen has left the building.

Man, it really looks like Karjakin is outplaying Carlsen, he just has a hard time converting leading positions into wins:

Nope, Carlsen found the coveted eye of the tiger. He struck back to even the score and then we had an all too familiar tie. The game today will decide things unless a there's a tie, which will mean a series of rapid play-off games on Wednesday to decide the winner.

Well, here we are. With a game so short that chess historians are seeing if it is the shortest game in championship history, other GMs had no problems voicing their disapproval with the style of play.
So what's next? Rapid games on Wednesday will decide the championship. After several rounds of shorter games, if they are still tied they will play an Armageddon game. 5 minutes for white and 4 for black, with black having draw odds. Carlsen has already drawn to have black in that final game.

Re: The Chess News Thread
Rapid games on Wednesday will decide the championship.
Sure, rapid in the sense that they won't be playing under 100 minute thresholds; but the first four games will be classical in the sense that they're 25 minute games with ten seconds added after each move, which on most Internet servers still counts as chess at its slowest. If they manage to draw all those games, then they move to the blitz games, playing two at a time up to ten. If in the unlikely event those games wind up in a tie, then the final Armageddon game will be played.
The odds of reaching the fabled Armageddon game are slim. Magnus Carlsen already lost a blitz tournament to Hikaru Nakamura earlier this year proving that faster chess is a chink in his armor waiting for exploitation. Karjakin is also skilled when it comes to faster play. All it will take is a slight miscalculation on either side and a winner could be declared.
Adding insult to injury, Wednesday is Magnus Carlsen's birthday. He thinks it would help him to play chess on that day, while many argue that players don't perform well on birthdays. Is it the sign of a well-deserved birthday present or an ill omen? In times like these, I wish I had a zodiac astrologer on speed dial.
